Character Name: Aeryn Sun
Series: Farscape
Age: Early 30s; her exact age is never directly stated.
From When?: Season 1, Episode 19: Nerve

Inmate/Warden: Aeryn is inmate material. She is most definitely not warden material and would honestly balk at the idea of leading anyone through most anything that didn't boil down to combat strategy.

Aeryn's primary issue is thus: she was raised in a militaristic society and culture that deemed emotional responses as signs of weakness, that put a great deal of pressure and importance on the preservation of the Peacekeeper (Sebacean) bloodline and superiority. She grew up as part of a unit system, climbed the ranks very quickly for someone her age, and did not doubt her position in this hierarchy.

As a Peacekeeper she has been a member of one of the largest groups of villains in the setting of Farscape; as an individual she has made choices that stunted her own emotional growth and limited her potential while also harming those she cared for - all in the name of the Peacekeeper code.

However, banishment from the Peacekeepers has meant that Aeryn has to find her own way and learn to function as a unique individual; not to mention allowing herself access to her own emotional range and withholding judgment on the perceived weaknesses of other persons and species for expressing their feelings more openly than Peacekeepers or other Sebaceans.

In short, Aeryn is an emotionally stunted soldier is in dire need of learning how to balance the code she was raised to believe in with being accepting and emotionally open to herself and others instead of just shutting herself down emotionally as a response to personal conflict she doesn't feel prepared or able to address directly.

Have I mentioned that Aeryn has emotional problems?

Abilities/Powers: Aeryn does not have any 'powers'; all special abilities in the Farscape setting are the result of genetics, genetics tampering, or other technological modifications.

That said, being a Sebacean, Aeryn possesses a slightly different physiology than humans; though the two are genetically related and genetically compatible. She has better sight than a baseline human, and her body possesses absolutely no ability to respond to extreme increases in heat. Exposure to extreme heat levels leads to heat delirum - notable not only for the terrifying physiological effects but because it is the only situation in which Peacekeepers will kill their own out of a sense of mercy.

She also possess the ability to understand most spoken languages thanks to translator microbes that exist in her brain. Understanding is not comprehension (to paraphrase River Tam) and thus just because she knows what someone is saying doesn't mean she'll know why.

This ability does not apply to the written word; however it can make learning a written language much easier.

On a more personal level, Aeryn has had several decades from birth onward of military combat training, which does give her an edge over combatants with less experience; she is still flesh and blood, however, and at the end of the day is a soldier, not a juggernaut.

Personality: Let us start with the obvious: that is to say, Aeryn's personality aspects one could likely sort out just from observing her for a day.

As a default, Aeryn is on guard and wary, especially around strangers. She is, first and foremost, a soldier - even if recent events have made it so that she can no longer call herself a Peacekeeper, several months of being stripped of her rank and duties does not unmake several decades of training, of lifestyle. Since being a soldier and Aeryn's personal identification of the self were inseparable concepts her entire life before she arrived on Moya the second time and encountered Crichton, it remains a core aspect of her personality.

With strangers she does not tend to use phrases such as I hope, I want, I wish. Terms like those not only denote a weakness (the uncertainty of possessing something that is important enough to warrant desire) but they give others entirely too much insight into Aeryn as a person, which is simply not acceptable. "The first rule of combat is know your enemy," Aeryn tells Zhaan at one point; since Aeryn sees a great deal of her life as combat, especially in situations where she is in much less control than she would prefer, giving away too much of herself gives the enemy - or simply anyone she does not trust - an advantage she simply cannot risk.

This wariness extends beyond what Aeryn is and is not going to say in the presence of strangers and affects her body language. When Aeryn is uncomfortable her posture tends towards small gestures that do not display much emotion or intention, shut off but not so withdrawn as to indicate personal insecurity; when she is upset, her body language takes on that precision to a near extreme.

Aeryn tends to be very literal, speaking clearly and directly and seems to appreciate when others do as well - it makes for fewer questions Aeryn has to ask, and fewer situations in which she feels uninformed or otherwise at a disadvantage. She will also be purposefully literal when she feels others are being too obtuse, though this is almost akin to teasing for Aeryn and thus isn't likely to happen while speaking with strangers for some time.

Like many Peacekeepers and Sebaceans specifically, Aeryn has something of a superiority complex. Sebaceans tend to look down on other species, especially those not skilled in warfare, political and otherwise; within the ranks of the Peacekeepers, soldiers look down on techs. Only other Peacekeepers are automatically gifted with a higher than normal consideration from Aeryn, though she can respect power when power is present. Everyone else starts at a sliding scale from 0 to -100 or so and has to work their way up into the positive considerations of Aeryn's mind.

Now, let's move on to some of the deeper personality aspects.

"I am not a scientist. I am, however, what I have always been and that is superior."

Aeryn possesses a sharp tactical mind honed by decades of service to the Peacekeepers. In the setting of Farscape being tactical does not necessarily mean sitting behind a screen and deciding where to move troops but also meant being out there with the troops; thus, Aeryn's concepts of tactics are very hands-on. Why delegate when you can assure that it's done right by doing it yourself? Her abilities work in more situations than just warfare - however, when applied to the sciences or diplomacy, Aeryn doubts herself greatly with the former and is often too blunt and easily frustrated to make much headway with latter. She likes clear lines of cause and effect that do not take long arcs of time - a shot fired means a downed enemy in less than half a micron and then Aeryn can move on. The finesse and time-consuming nature of both science and diplomacy (be it on a large or small scale) means that she tends to run into the problem of her own impatience long before the task is completed.

Once she learns to temper her impatience, Aeryn can put her mind to any number of things, without question.

Aeryn's upbringing has instilled within her a very deep and abiding sense of unity with one's group, shipmates, teammates, etcetera. This doesn't make it easier, per se, for her to interact with those she feels she has nothing in common with but it does allow her to get past her own sense of superiority long enough to be productive and work towards an end goal in the favor of all involved. Disharmony in the group/team, however, tends to set her in a fit of aggravation, as most of those problems stem from communication issues and the wants of one clashing with the wants of another. If people spoke clearly and directly and stopped worrying about their frelling feelings they'd all get more done.

This strong sense of team and the importance of being a Peacekeeper, which was used in place of what one might associate with the feelings of being part of a family or strong culture with rich history, becomes the source of personal disruption on Aeryn's part when she's forced to leave the title of Peacekeeper behind. If she is not a Peacekeeper, then what is she? If she cannot be with other Sebaceans, then where does she belong? Aeryn is terrified of being alone, of being left behind - and to a lesser extent, of being singled out, of being unique and easily identifiable.

However, admitting this fear means admitting a weakness; an impossibility, in Aeryn's mind. That the fear exists is enough of a weakness within itself, and part of Aeryn sincerely believes that if she were to just stop having feelings then everything would work as it should for her. She'd lost everything she'd known acting on a sudden sense of compassion and inherent unfairness and inaccuracy in the actions of her superior, and she does not feel good about that. The cost, in her opinion, was much too high but there is nothing to be done for it.

Aeryn also possesses the sort of blunt honesty that only those with a sincere appreciation for directness tend to have. Amongst friends, those she trusts, or those she has known for some time and does not view as a threat Aeryn is comfortable admitting failings, weaknesses, and occasionally fears - not to mention a much lighter type of teasing than her sarcasm usually manages.

Barge Reactions: As a Peacekeeper, Aeryn has been exposed to countless alien lifeforms and cultures, not to mention living ships and symbiotic life-forms that live in the cold expanse of space to name two of the species that stand out the most. Characters from various genres and settings won't be too weird for her, or distressing; she's somewhat used to people who look, act, think, behave much differently from what she is personally familiar with.

What will be weird for her is the way in which the Barge itself is run, as it is rather different from any prison vessel she is used to dealing with. The idea that inmates are allowed to socialize and are being held with the intent of improvement without there being an ulterior motive will be an idea that Aeryn finds difficult to accept.

Anyone who infers or suggests or outright states that they are a deity of some sort will get a skeptical mental side-eye from Aeryn, as anything with that much power that allowed itself to be captured and put here with everyone else clearly is not in possession of nearly as much power as they would have others believe. This skepticism will be in place whether the 'deity' involved is a Warden or an Inmate, though the latter will likely get the brunt of her sarcasm in response.

She may be disbelieving of the idea that the ship is not a living one, considering the manner in which it's inmates and wardens are affected by floods and breaches. Essentially, Aeryn will roll with the punches in this setting, though there will definitely be an annoyance at how backwards and strange the technology is.

Not to mention the fact that human is the new standard.

On the topic of humans and Era sucks at transitions in apps occasionally, Aeryn will be curious of all the different types of humans on board the Barge. Her only exposure to the species thus far has been Crichton, who has been slowly but steadily losing his mind since they met, and thus she has not had anyone prior to compare his behavior to before.

She will be very on edge upon arrival, not only because she has died but because she won't be allowed her weapon.

Path to Redemption: Aeryn's redemption is not too terribly complicated, but it will be time consuming. The idea that Aeryn could be more than just a 'mindless Peacekeeper' is one that has come up several times in her life thus far, usually with emotionally and personally devastating consequences in the end; as a result, she will be somewhat wary of anyone who uses this suggestion in encouraging her to embrace her own emotional spectrum and critical thinking outside of military strategic situations. Aeryn will need to trust her Warden in order to flourish under their guidance, and before she can trust anyone she will need to respect them.

There is also another aspect of this that a Warden could work with; the fact that Aeryn thrives in environments where she is part of a unit, part of a team, with a clearly defined role that speaks to her talents (or at least, to the ones she feels confident about).

History: Aeryn Sun @ the Farscape Wikia

Sample Journal Entry: Aeryn at the test-drive meme for TLV.

Sample RP: Aeryn feels uncertain about her quarters. They look the same as her room on Moya, down to the last curve and angle, but the view from the window shows the similar yet slightly different corridors from the ship where she spent her childhood.

It is such a subtly jarring sensation, to see those two parts of her life so neatly arranged in this situation. As if it will somehow convince her this experiment she seems to be a part of now, post-mortem, may actually work. As if she'll be comforted by the dichotomy.

As if she could be comforted. As if her comfort actually would matter beyond mere appearances.

She tries not to think about it. She tries not to be too thrown by the food, the laughter, the petty fighting, the sheer number of frelling humans she has to contend with. She tries not to miss anything.

She is moderately successful. Usually. Sometimes she isn't. Sometimes she misses quite a few things, and sometimes she becomes so angry with herself for falling back on emotions - useless, discomforting, distracting concerns and recollections over things she cannot change or control.

Instead of wondering whether or not her death has edged Crichton further across the precipice that seems to be his relationship with his sanity, instead of worrying who will keep them from making foolish mistakes in combat, instead of the soft sense of loss that occurs whenever she the intercom comes to life and for that half a parsec she expects to hear Pilot's voice, she should be finding a way out of here. Finding a solution. Fighting or ...something.

Anything other than feeling.

Special Notes: Strange terms, units of measurement, etcetera that appear in this app and Aeryn's speech can be found with their definitions and synonyms here.
